LISBON, PORTUGAL!!!!!
Finally made it, despite the craziness... :D
From our hotel:
In a plaza we went to like . . . 3 times in two days. Ridiculous. But then again, Lisbon is TINY.
Really gross mass of smelly fish were swimming in their little bay... EW.
These next two pictures were taken within 30 seconds of each other. Weird, right?
(Trying to be serious... haha)
From Priscilla's camera:
From our first dinner on a quaint little staircase. This was a deliciously garlicky (and, unfortunately, too salty!) bread soup. I actually made it a few weeks ago:
Day two:
Our breakfast
Liz finally joined us late the night before:
ROAST CHESTNUTS! Smells amaaazing!
LOOK, 媽! I'm wearing the scarf/glove combo you got me!
The tiles in the walkways were kind of cool...
Going up the elevator (seen above)
Scene from above... The plaza here is seen in half the postcards you'll see in Lisbon.
It started raining, and we took a tram. SO much like San Francisco-- hilly, rainy/wet, trams, and MUCH more.../
We were supposed to go see a castle, but the furthest we got was seeing the peahens outside. We were too cheap to pay the 6 euros to get in (but not too cheap to pay nearly 20 euros for lunch . . . hahaha!)
My current desktop background...
They like these kind of doorknobs in Portugal. A bit freaky, no?
Lunch... No idea what it was called, but I'm eating a bacahao steak (bacahao = codfish). SO DELICIOUS. Don't I look so happy????
The "chips" in Portugal are actually rather thick and soft.
Black pork and clams. I think there were five clams.
Like a
葡式
蛋塔, but Portuguese Style, also known as Pasteis de Belem:Sightseeing:
We basically just looked at things from the outside and checked them off our list. First, we took an HOUR-long bus ride (it should have taken 10 minutes).
... to see the monastery.
It's a port city, so lots of boats. And cool patterned tiles.
One of the major landmarks:
...in 1492, Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue.... Actually, I don't know if it's Columbus. Haha. Oops.
They have a Golden Gate bridge. JUST like San Francisco. The posers!
Dinner + Fado (traditional Portuguese blues . . . kind of like their version of Japanese enka):
We were three, cute Asian girls. They came up to us, I say.
(I ate the entire bass on my own!)
They came up to Liz and tried to persuade her to sing Hey Jude with them. No go. But yes to the picture!
This man has a very, very sexy voice. We entered this restaurant because we heard him, actually. A bunch of others sang, but he was by FAR the best singer. I have video. May or may not post it later.
After our group shot, he said he wanted a shot with just us.
What a player.
Still. A sexy voice is a sexy voice.
The next day, before going to Porto, we wandered outside in the sunshine for a little bit longer.
And found this place in the Alcantara district for lunch. Grelhados de Alcántara (The Grill of Alcántara).
Iberian ham, veal, and the MOST tender octopus I've ever had in my life.
Delicious, local cheese:
Looks like Chinese sausage, but is totally different:
Wine, of course:
We actually have to pay for bread . . .
. . . and anything else they put out beforehand as appetizer. These sneaky Portuguese!
The octopus:
The veal...
Liz taking photos. We are camera whores. Seriously.
All the food... YUM.
The pork. Not my favorite of the three, but by no means any less delicious.
Our dessert was a flan-lookalike. It's actually ice cream with caramel on top.
Oh, right before that, we were hanging out at the Aquaduct. It was . . . meh.
WHEE!
Yeah, we're back:
En route to Porto:
Off we went!
Beautiful clouds . . .
