Finally made it, despite the craziness... :D

In a plaza we went to like . . . 3 times in two days. Ridiculous. But then again, Lisbon is TINY.

Really gross mass of smelly fish were swimming in their little bay... EW.

It started raining, and we took a tram. SO much like San Francisco-- hilly, rainy/wet, trams, and MUCH more.../

We were supposed to go see a castle, but the furthest we got was seeing the peahens outside. We were too cheap to pay the 6 euros to get in (but not too cheap to pay nearly 20 euros for lunch . . . hahaha!)

Lunch... No idea what it was called, but I'm eating a bacahao steak (bacahao = codfish). SO DELICIOUS. Don't I look so happy????

The "chips" in Portugal are actually rather thick and soft.

We basically just looked at things from the outside and checked them off our list. First, we took an HOUR-long bus ride (it should have taken 10 minutes).

They have a Golden Gate bridge. JUST like San Francisco. The posers!

Dinner + Fado (traditional Portuguese blues . . . kind of like their version of Japanese enka):
We were three, cute Asian girls. They came up to us, I say.

They came up to Liz and tried to persuade her to sing Hey Jude with them. No go. But yes to the picture!

This man has a very, very sexy voice. We entered this restaurant because we heard him, actually. A bunch of others sang, but he was by FAR the best singer. I have video. May or may not post it later.

After our group shot, he said he wanted a shot with just us.

What a player.

The next day, before going to Porto, we wandered outside in the sunshine for a little bit longer.

And found this place in the Alcantara district for lunch. Grelhados de Alcántara (The Grill of Alcántara).

St. Jean-de-Luz, the French Pays Basque
After our excursion into the wonders of Spanish Basque Country (País Vasco) with Bilbao and Donostia-San Sebastián, of course we have to go to the French Basque Country (Pays Basque)!

We hopped on the train from San Sebastián to Hendaye (where Hitler decided that Franco was too much of an idiot to become an ally with, thus cutting Spain out of the wrong side of WWII... lucky Spaniards!), then from Hendaye we hopped on another train to St. Jean-de-Luz, an adorably tiny coastal town.

So the first thing we do when we get to France at 1 p.m. is not to figure out what to do for lunch. Oh no, my friends. The first thing we do is take care of . . . DINNER.

So we found a little place that was a few blocks from our hotel (recommended by God-of-European-Travel Rick Steves) and with the help of Alea's awesome phrasebook and my embarassingly horrendous and nonexistent French we managed to make reservations for 7:30 p.m. Excellent. And, at 2 p.m., it was time to find . . . lunch.

Where did we go? Yet another place on Rick Steves´recommended places to eat in the French Pays Basque.

Yes, we hit up two restaurants in one day.

No, we are not heifers.

Not really, anyway. :D

Our main course:

YUM.

We went for a walk around, and . . . I FOUND MACARONS!

Not quite the same, but I bought a bag anyway. Because I'm silly like that. Heh.

Three and a half hours later . . .

We hit up restaurant 2... Heh.

This one, I think, was the better one.

This little French child kept staring unabashedly at me. And smiling. But the second I busted out Priscilla's camera, she hid. This was the one picture I managed to get of her. Adorable, no? Maybe I should find a way to make sure my future children have golden ringlets . . .

Hmm, somehow I don't think my Asian blood will let that happen.

We were close to the Bordeaux region, and since it is really difficult to make it to Bordeaux without a car, we splurged and bought a bottle of Bordeaux. Heh. And yes, we had wine with our lunch, too.

Our petit dejeuner (breakfast) included: a croissant, a large pat of butter, orange juice, a baguette, jam, and a café. :D

Unfortunately, it was pouring that day, so we had to hide for cover as we made it back to Bilbao. Just in time for our 5 p.m. class!

We were there for the 58th San Sebastián Film Festival. Pretty cool, no?

The weather was pretty crappy, but we still had a ton of fun.

Sadly, my camera was stolen shortly thereafter, so I have no more photos from that weekend of myself. SO SAD.

Donostia-San Sebastián-- Take 2 (Priscilla´s Birthday fun)
We went to San Sebastián again because, yes, the food is just THAT good. Good fortune followed us this time (or better planning) and we were met with gorgeous weather.

晚上... 新買的裙子...

You know how I told you that there would be two large men who would be protecting us? That would be Thomas (far left, in the orange) and Kevann (right back, in the yellow). Too bad they're not particularly reliable . . . (Thomas texted me at 2pm asking me when we were leaving, I texted him back saying that we had been there for 4 hours already. We lost Kevann somewhere in the morning... and then again in the middle of the night. Both of them had phone trouble, too. Thomas had no battery left-- Kevann had no money left... SIGH! BIG MAN-BABIES! :D Love them both regardless, though. They made the night fun! It just... took us the whole day to finally meet up with them...)

Our second stop were for the MOST TENDER BEEF CHEEKS in the WORLD. I would die happy if this was part of my final meal. In fact, this beef was one of 3 reasons why we came back to San Sebastian a week after being robbed... the first reason were "brochetas de gambas"-- skewered shrimp-- which have got to be the MOST delicious shrimp ever in my life.... By the way, the beef cheeks are a little bit like 媽媽's 紅燒牛肉...But, dare I say, even more tender...

I am ridiculously happy. Can you tell? (The short Indian guy in the front was someone Jesus met in his hostel... from Australia. Didn't speak a lick of Spanish. Poor fool. Lucky he met with us to get some great grub...)

And this picture does not do it justice-- Foi Gras with Apple compote... the texture of ice cream... the taste of heaven.

I'm drooling now.

You should be, too.

Roommate love!

We went to Herria Bar, which is the bar that is notorious as a meeting place for the Basque separatist terrorst-rebels (the ETA). They're crazy. Thomas wanted to go. Soooo... we stopped by. And had this nasty local drink that tasted like licorice. Yeecchhh...

PS, I had to get permission to take this picture of Thomas. Which was allowed only if no bartenders or workers were included in the picture.

I don't think I had been that happy in a long, long, long time.

Here are photos, as promised!

Priscilla and me-- we've graduated! Just kidding. Just finished our 10-day course, and they gave us "diplomas." With a red ribbon and everything!

Now, for Barcelona!

(Our hostel-- I slept on the top bunk, Priscilla slept on the bottom. The hostel was huge-- 430 beds!-- and very clean.)

Beautiful alleyways.

Barcelona is filled with Catalonians, who are just as proud as the Basque. They speak their own language, Catalan, and the flag you see in the picture above is the flag representing those who want their own country, separate from Spain. The Basque have their own version of a flag that represents the separatists who want their own country as well.

I swear, the entire country does not want to be part of Spain. From what I've heard, the only people who want to remain part of Spain are those in Madrid . . . Haha. There's a region where a fourth language is spoken, too: Galician. Kind of crazy, no?

Speaking of which-- to my brothers: remember Asterix and Obelix? I think that the Gauls = the Basque. Possibly, no?

La Rambla is the street for tourists. Shopping, food, shows, peddlers, etc. Everything is on this street. Unfortunately, that includes pick pockets and thieves and thugs. Priscilla and I were very careful, though, and we had no problems. In fact, we had a ton of fun.

Jon, it's you! But... cuter!

St. Josep Mercat:

A huge street market, we were lucky to catch the tail end of this place on Friday. There was a fiesta (read: holiday) that weekend, so it was closed on Saturday and Sunday. Boo!

And they also LOVE their sweets. CHOCOLATE, MAN. Boys, this would be your heaven. They had other candies, too, but there is a VERY high amount of chocolate. Like below:

And, of course, seafood! My friend, Guio, was super excited to see this one. She says it's delicious. I have absolutely no idea what it is:

DAY TWO-- Barcelona:

I've been having a strange penchant for interesting doorways . . .

Because the Mercat was closed, our plans for lunch were thrown askew. Until we found a cute little woman named Montserrat ("Like the Mountain," she said), who directed us to this restaurant with "authentic Catalunyan food." It was delightful. The two of us 20-year-olds eating some absolutely fabulous Catalonian food amongst a bunch of 60+ year old locals who clearly knew what's up.

There was a mini lobster in our food. I decided to take a picture with him before I ate him. It may have been a crawdad. Not sure.

Montserrat, the lady who recommended the restaurant, turned out to be waitress there! Haha, nice!

While wandering in our hunger, we found this adorable truck. Whee!

Can one go to Spain without trying flan? No! While we waited for the aforementioned restaurant to open at 1:30 for lunch, we had a snack of flan and orange juice.

This was on the way back from the Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia (Gaudi) that morning. Yay Barca. Dunno why that guy is staring at me. Is he check us out, or does he think I'm checking him out while I'm taking my photo? Hah!

Day THREE:

By the end of our Barcelona Trip, Priscilla and I must have walked over 20 miles. We started in the East, walked to the West, then went from the North down to the beach in the South. And in between, we circled and rounded around as we got lost, refound, and lost again. I loved it. This is the best way to explore a city-- by talking to locals and finding out what to really try and experience.

Speaking of which, I've noticed that people in Spain are extremely nice and friendly. Especially if you smile a lot and make attempts to speak to them in Spanish. I don't know if it was because two cute, Asian girls who were butchering Spanish were trying to ask for directions, but almost everyone stops, smiles, and points us in the right direction. Or, in many instances, they tell us "oh, no no, you cannot go there because it's for tourists. You want to go here . . . " And then they proceed to point us in a new direction, writing down their favorite restaurants or sights or places.

Plus, it helps, I think, that Priscilla and I are quite open minded. We're willing to try new cuisines and talk with the locals. We've made it a point to talk to locals all around us. I met a bunch of kids from the UK who speak only English-English, and they make no attempt whatsoever to enjoy the local traditions, life, etc. For example, pork is HUGE in Spain. So when you go to Spain, unless you have some religious reason or dietary problem that restricts your eating habits, you know what I'd recommend? EATING PORK. Or, at least, trying it. If it disagrees with you, then move on. But not without first trying it. The girls from the UK would just look at a dish and refuse it vehemently.

Maybe that's why they're so skinny.

And weak.

WAHAA.

(Don't get me wrong-- I love them to death-- it's just their eating habits that drove me nuts).

My newest purchase... from Williams-Sonoma. Originally $56 for four. I got it for $33 with shipping and handling! WHOOHOO. I have been wanting seat cushions for a while, so... yay!

Also, I bought this a while back. I'm still waiting for it to come in:

I just got the green/olive striped one. Haha, you know me. :D I figure it's high time I got a change of bedsheets! Why not go all out and get Lacoste?! $44... originally at least $80 something.... if not $120 something... ^_^v

We were going off to the Bay Area APALSA Mixer (with students from Berkeley, USF, Golden Gate U, Santa Clara, Davis, etc...). This is us, pre-dinner. L-->R: Cheryl, Grace, Me, and Gina.
